A Russian national, Nikolay Vilkov, 29, was arrested in Martin County, Florida after attempting to steal a $2.5 million yacht from Blowing Rocks Marina in the town of Tequesta.
According to local authorities, Vilkov boarded the 20-meter yacht and set course for the Bahamas, triggering a full-scale police response. Officers from the marine unit, land patrol, and even a helicopter were deployed in the chase, which lasted nearly 90 minutes.
The vessel was eventually forced into the mangrove swamps, where Vilkov was taken into custody.
Earlier the same day, he allegedly tried to steal a TowBoatUS rescue boat but failed. During questioning, he claimed he could not speak English, although officers said he had previously communicated in fluent English during interactions in another city.
Authorities revealed that Vilkov and his family had traveled from Turkey to Mexico in 2022, crossed the U.S. border, and requested asylum. After receiving a temporary permit, they relocated to Florida.
He now faces charges including grand theft, resisting arrest, fleeing law enforcement, and attempted vessel theft. Officials added that following sentencing, he will likely be deported to Russia.
