The Bayesian superyacht, previously described as “unsinkable”, sank in just 15 seconds off the coast of Sicily in August 2024 during a freak wind event.
According to a new report from the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), the vessel had critical design flaws, including a 72-meter mast and elevated keel, which reduced its lateral stability. When hit by powerful side winds, the yacht listed over 70 degrees, then quickly capsized.
There were 22 people onboard, including tech billionaire Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, and other VIP guests. Seven lives were lost, including both Lynch and his daughter.
The stability documents did not reflect the real behavior of the vessel under adverse wind conditions. Even more concerning, the crew was unaware of these structural risks.
The superyacht now rests 50 meters underwater, and a salvage diver died during early recovery attempts — forcing authorities to suspend the operation.
Italian officials have since opened a criminal investigation into involuntary manslaughter, focusing on the captain and crew.
This incident highlights the urgent need for greater engineering transparency, improved safety regulations, and better training for crews aboard luxury vessels.
